San O'
San Onofre, North County, San Diego.
World-famous longboard surf spot.
It's even in the dumb Beach Boys song.
Named for Saint Onuphrius, the "Bearded Lady" saint. She started out as a young girl who was being dogged by a choad she didn't want, a choad her parents "gave" her to in marriage because he had dollars. The night before the wedding she prayed hardcore and awoke with a full beard, which was revealed when the choad lifted her veil. He ran away, and she went on spend her life in the desert in Egypt, eating dates and hearts of palm. Her hair grew so long that it was her only clothing, other than a leafy thing for her bathing suit area.
She is usually depicted and spoken of as a man, a girl who became a man, but once in a while somebody will say that she remained a lady who had an enormous beard. Of course I can't find my picture of her as a lady with a lady body and a full beard. She's shown like that on a fresco in an early church in a cave in southern Turkey.
I gotta go hit the bricks and "work" today, but I'll try to check in.
xoxo
We thought, sure, we're in a little heat wave, what better time to go to the desert. "Heat wave" for San Diego is upper 80's-lower 90's by the coast. Why not go where it's 120 degrees instead?
There is a thrift store there run by the Foundation for the Retarded of the Desert.
Just saying.

Capt'n. I am gearing up for a 90 degree day here. I'd like to get on a longboard right now. Anyway, I am working on a beard of the bristly variety. By the time I hit 70, it may be this long.

Wow I love this saint story. i didn't know. MM would like her to be my patron saint as i have always wanted to be a tall man with a long beard but stay a lady.
Hope you had a nice time in the desert. It sounds dreamy.

, atWell Capt'n what do you know, that is great news that you thought I was a man. I love that. I think I may have thought you were a man very very briefly before I started really reading your blog. Seems so long ago. I thought PD was a man too at first. She had such a swashbuckling mouth on her, that naughty PD. Well we should have all known that this much derangement and excitation could only come from the ladies. Right now my beard is quite sweaty not as cooling as I would have hoped. Here's to you and wishing you a lovely day.
